Sheri Cohen

Living my life with intention and awareness, and seeing the interconnection, has lead me to a new realm that I never knew was possible. I never dreamt at the age of 51 that I would be here writing my biography for our CD Launch and website……indeed, anything is possible.

My background is in Social Work/Entrepreneurship/Philanthropy. For the past 15 years I have worked in the field of learning disabilities. During this time I founded a non-profit organization for youth and adults with learning disabilities. In 2005 my life took a radical turn to further my deepest desire to know that which lies within. It is a journey that is continually unfolding, even as I type this.

In the summer of 2006 I received a healing session at Hollyhock from Shine who played the didgeridoo over my body. I experienced a breaking open of my heart and discovered places within me that I had not accessed before through the vibrations of the instrument, that penetrated deep into my being. I was moved to other realms that were unexplainable, which had a profound effect on me both spiritually and emotionally. I was able to tap into deep emotions that seemed to have been locked away for centuries. I spent some time with Shine after our session asking about this wondrous instrument that originated in Australia, and was a significant part of Aboriginal culture, in particular “The Dreamtime”. I knew then I wanted to learn to play the didge, as it is most commonly called here in North America. This experience was to become part of my new foundation in my self healing and others, using this instrument in particular for healing as I had experienced. I learnt about the act of giving and receiving through playing my didge. I had often played various instruments like the sitar, drums, piano to name a few, but I lost interest quickly. The Didgeridoo changed all that.

Two years ago, I began lessons with Gary Diggins, it was to be both challenging and a joyful experience, and it was Gary’s Wisdom and personal knowledge of the power of this instrument that he was able to keep me on track, especially at times when it seemed I could go no further due to the emotional areas that surfaced during and between our sessions. Coming from a secular Jewish background I found my Tallit a form of comfort. When the shadow side emerged and I could not play or receive enough breath to hold a drone, I would wear my tallit (prayer shawl) to help me dwell in and rest in the place of Chochmah (Wisdom) to see what was bring brought forward and to hold care and compassion for myself on my own journey. Each time I played it expanded my inner and outer worlds well beyond my limitations and belief systems. Venturing into the recording studio was another step along my path of self discovery; the result was the creation of a CD of that experience and what was birthed during that process.

As I was beginning to play more rhythmically using my Didge in a mic to pre-recorded music in the studio, I thought let’s put Didge with chanting, alternative and world music, saying in jest with some seriousness, wouldn’t it be fun to create what I felt was a whole new sound. At the time I called it The Monk Funk Project, which caused us to become what we are now due to legalities, and that we wanted a name that was original, like the music.

My next step was to ask someone to join me, that someone I had met a year earlier at the beginning of the Sound Practitioners Course. Trefor was an urban monk without a doubt, and he was gifted of Buddhist chant/vocals that I knew was what I wanted in the mix.

When the recording for the CD was complete, the task of naming the “baby” was next. Originally it was the title of the first track, Jataka, but someone else had claim to that one. We wanted originality, just like our music, so we chose what Jataka ( a Tibetan word) meant: “birth stories”. How one describes our music is limited by mere words and is better listened to as every listening to us has been a different sonic experience, as if hearing something completely different that we hadn’t heard before. Our CD has changed its face many times and then came upon using who “I am” and my Own name and Trefor’s pseudonym name. Thus, our CD was birthed after much deliberation and sitting with “my own calling” waiting and listening to what I felt was true to my own heart. I welcome you to listen to this new music and join with us in our celebration.
